FROM NAME TO SYMBOL

For the Emancipation album CD booklet, Prince put together the credits somewhat on the fly. I did my best to type the information as he spoke (not my strong suit). We got to a song called “Face Down,” which included a car horn sample.

“Do you drive a BMW or a Jeep?” he asked.

“Neither,” I said. Crappy old Nissan hadn’t been an option.

“You drive a Jeep.”

My fictitious Jeep was then credited. Looking back, I should have tried to roll that into an endorsement deal.

As we got to the end of the credits he asked, “Have you ever thought about changing your name to a symbol?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“My mom wouldn’t like it.”

“Good answer,” he said, and let it drop.

Prince had a habit of creating new monikers for the people he worked with: Bobby Z., St. Paul, Sheila E., Carmen Electra, Tommy Barbarella, Dr. Fink, Brown Mark, Vanity, and Apollonia, for example. And he had a host of his own alter egos, too: Joey Coco, Jamie Starr, Alexander Nevermind, to name but a few.

I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised when he suggested I change my name to a symbol. Since I resisted that, we agreed on just “Parke”. I suppose it was better than some of the alternatives.

I never pondered that one too hard, because sometimes just thinking it made it a reality when dealing with Prince.
